Are We Addicted to Our Gadgets?

Since the boom of technology in the 19th century that brought about the light bulb and radio to now, technology has increased at a rapid rate. If you went back in time 50 years and told people that in the future people could listen to music on devices as small as a pebble; contact almost anyone in world within seconds and have any question answered in no time at all, they’d think you should be probably be put in a strait jacket and locked up in some institution.

Technology has developed so rapidly. The 21st century has seen the coming of some amazing technology, from 3D entertainment and super thin HD TV’s, to Social networking sites and EBooks.  But is this all too much? Many of us are dependent on our smart phones and would never dream of leaving the house without them. This begs the question is all this technology really necessary? Is it taking over our lives?

Dusty Books at the Library? Chances are the Internet is responsible

Many people believe that nowadays we are far too reliant upon our phones and computers and all our other absurd high tech, super-fast, super slim, multi-tasking know it all gadgets. To be fair to these sceptics if you prohibited those of the current generation from using any kind of technology and then asked us to do such tasks as, “Find this address”, “ Find out the words to the national anthem of Mongolia” (random country ) or “ Find out who discovered such and such”. Many of us wouldn’t even know where to begin. We have grown up with technology; I can recall early memories of playing my PlayStation 1 and even using computers, even if it was for very basic tasks. And honestly I think we’d actually cry if we were told we would never be able to use any tech or gadgets again; just me then, ok.  We have become very dependent on tech and personally I would struggle to go more than a few days without any, but have we become too in need of it all? Many would say yes but then again many others would disagree.

Really and truly I think we have disregarded the basic purpose of all this tech. When you think about it, the only purpose of all these gadgets is to make our lives easier. Before 1972 when the internet was created if you needed to find out something it was off to the library you went, now you can jump on the computer and just ‘Google it’ and have your answer in seconds, In this case you can see just much easier and more convenient tech has made our lives. What we know as smart phones today are capable of doing almost anything short of cooking your dinner and in today’s society they have almost become a necessity. I don’t think we are necessarily addicted to our gadgets but I think we can all admit that we love the convenience and instantaneousness of it.

With Technology developing at the speed of light, who's to say what the future holds?

We’re well past the days when Apples and Blackberries were better known as fruit than tech icons. A recent landmark in the development of technology is the launch of the innovative ‘Siri’ software on the iPhone 4. This major because it is the best voice recognition software on the market. You can talk to it and it responds. You could be walking down the street and ask it a questions such as, “will I need an umbrella later” and it will respond by telling you the forecast. This is a glimpse of the future. In another 10 years maybe we’ll be able to manipulate all our gadgets with just the sound of our voice.

This scares some people though, as it heralds the coming of tech only imaginable in some ‘Minority Report’ type film. Should we reject these technological advancements or should we embrace them? The choice is yours but at the end of the day you can’t stand against progress. It’s either you try to stand against it and become increasingly mystified at the ever changing tech world or ride the wave and use it to your advantage. Either way I know where I stand.
